well i havent really tried online lessons, but ,my sis has. their not really that great. i would go with private lessons because you could get some one on one time with your teacher. he or she could help you alot better than the stupid computer

Well I'll be honest… i havent ever had a 1 on 1 guitar lesson… i pretty much taught myself everything and asked for a friends help in the beginning… online lessons are certainly helpful for beginners and intermediate players, but you can only get so good from them, when at that point you really just have to get help, either from a friend or relative or by paying for lessons. But don't get scammed either, i know plenty of great places that offer 1 on 1 lessons for about $60 a month for one lesson a week (about $15 a lesson), some even less.

I know a whole lot of talented guitarists and none of them ever took lessons, other than being shown a chord here and there from a friend back in the day.

You run the risk of losing interest if you go the private lessons route. You'll be overwhelmed by information you don't really need to know and most likely won't interest you.

Just ask a friend to show you a few chords. That's all you need to do to get started, you'll figure the rest out on your own.

It really is a preference thing…imho

Some people learn by doing, others by being taught in 1 of two ways. If you respond well to 1-on-1 instruction over classroom style instruction, invest in lessons and find a teacher you like.
If you are thinking classrom (aka online), or DVD, below is probably the best DVD series out there. I have used it, it helped me learn and and I still use it to clean up some of my fundamentals in the later lessons in the series. And it has a price to match! But you can frequently find this program out on craiglist for a bargain.

Good luck and whatever you do, have fun

Online guitar lessons are the way to go. They're much cheaper than a private instructor. They're available 24/7/365, not just a time or two a week. And, you can access the lessons at your convenience, day or night, not at your instructor's convenience. Plus, some of the best instructors in the world are available through online guitar lessons.
