Where to learn to play the guitar online?

I agree with your first answer that youtube is an option. Also, check out ultimate-guitar.com. There are lots of songs there with chords and tabs. There is also a site called 8notes.com that offers online lessons, etc. I am a guitar teacher myself, and the 8notes site seems the best for what you are looking for. Good luck!

PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.

It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There’s also lesson on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.
