this answer is coming from a guy who is self taught at the guitar. i picked it up about four years ago, and have been loving it ever since. but i wish that i would have taken lessons. i'm pretty sure that i'm doing several things wrong, and i don't really know basic music theory. i do it all from memory and figuring stuff out by ear. i would say to take lessons until you know basic strumming patterns, and have a good idea of music theory, and you can play some basic scales. afterwards, it wouldn't hurt to take a lesson every once in a while, just to make sure you're on the right path. everything i know, i figured it out by myself. and i'm an ok guitar player.

well it differs from person to person. i would recommend taking lessons, and until you feel you understand everything alright, then you can self teach yourself. i would just go take lessons, and when you see results you can stop and self teach. or you might find you rather just learn by that particular teacher. good luck and happy playing!
