Interested in learning guitar online – any good tips?

I have always been interested in learning to play the guitar. But with a pretty hectic schedule, I’ve found it hard to find a good guitar instructor and the time to sit for lessons. Wondering if people on yahoo can provide tips and suggestions on learning guitar online.

Learning guitar, like any musical instrument, requires patience and time commitment. I can understand that it is harder for adults to learn to play an instrument with a busy schedule. I have been pretty much like you, always wanted to learn to play and never got the opportunity. So finally last October, I began researching for guitar learning courses online.

I found tons of free resources online for free, which got me going (just google keywords like free guitar chord guide etc). So I was able to collect and use a lot of free resources online. I wanna learn to play acoustic guitar, what guitar should I get as a starter?

Start with a basic steel string guitar. Several companies offer a "starter pak" that comes with a good quality guitar, a gig bag, an electronic tuner, and some accessories, all starting at around $100 to $175. The brands I recommend are Ibanez, Fender, Epiphone, and Yamaha. Most music stores carry one or more of these brands. Do not buy from a big box store like Wal-mart or costco because the instruments they have are usually inferior quality and not professionally set up.
Be sure to get lessons to get you off to a good start. Good luck and have fun!

i want to learn to play the guitar but im 12. i have not money so i need to find free lessons online. does anyone have any links?

There are a lot of lessons you can find on YouTube. Depending on what kind of stuff you want to learn, just type it in. For example, "how to strum guitar". Or, "blues guitar tutorial." You’re bound to find a lot!

Or, you can type the same stuff into Google and you’ll find a bunch of webpages too.

I’ve had my guitar for a while but just never actually bothered to learn to play it and now i really want to learn but i dont have enough money for lessons so i was just gonna try to learn online, where could i go?

PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.

It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There’s also lesson on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.

What does everyone think about online guitar lessons versus lessons from an instructor?

I need help deciding whether to get guitar lessons online or go to an actual instructor.

When learning an instrument, an actual teacher is the only way to go. Online studies might teach you a few chords, but that’s no substitute for personal instruction.

How to learn the bass guitar?

Hey. Any suggestions on how I can learn playing the bass guitar, and where I start? I have some basic knowledge of playing the acoustic guitar, but I now wish to learn the bass.

here is an old post of mine

alot of people i see here post things such as ”i taught myself piano its easy”
let me say any instrument is easy, but to properly play it & understand what the heck your doing (this helps your creative process when writing your own stuff) is another different matter.
i could be taught to recite out 10 basic piano tunes, but give me the likes of Mozarts music & ask me to use certain techniques that are heard on piano. i would fail (as would all the people claiming ”its easy”)

the problem with teaching yourself guitar (or any instrument) is that alot of people give up they get frustrated. (supposedly 90% of self taught musicians quit)
also alot of people can ”play” guitar, ie bang out a few songs & intros eg starirway to heaven.
guitarists are a dime a dozen, everybody plays guitar (heck i play guitar) however a decent guitarist is hard to find this is where you can benifit from lessons.

Lessons are definitely a great idea, a teacher can show you techniques & correct you. i still get corrected over things i do at my lessons.
alot of the internet resources aren’t that great, again it is alot of amateurs with bad technique or looking to make a quick buck.

every music autobiography i have read (& i read quite a fair bit of them) the guitarist/any instrument, has gotten lessons at some point.
there are a rare few virtuoso (ie talented) people who didn’t get lessons but even at that they start practicing with other people who have got lessons & learn off them.
As somebody said those ”guitar for dummies” are great, however that is as a side tool to reference to. not to just teach yourself, at a glance you learn the basics but when you study those books they can get quite complicated & a teacher can clear any questions you have.
a teacher also encourages you to practice & gives you set goals.

PS try not to ask people to give you the chords to a song, its better if you can work them out yourself it creates an ear for certain notes. however make sure what you are playing is correct.

How hard is it to learn guitar from a book?

I want to learn guitar, I have no musical background so I don’t know any chords or even what that is! Its just a dream of mine to learn. Is it very hard to learn guitar from a book?

You can start to play with some decent books. I have been playing for over 30 years. I started out with a battered old guitar and Mel Bay’s Book of Chords. I will offer a few tips for success:

1) Form. Pay attention to how the book shows you to position your hand and fingers. Do it the
correct way. You’ll be glad you did as you become more advanced.

2) Walking the scale. Spend at least 10 minutes each time you practice walking up each
string, open, first, second, third, fourth fingers. Then back down. This may seem
monotonous, but it builds finger strength, correct positioning and callousing.

3) Dedication. Play at least 30 minutes every day. Don’t give up because your fingers
hurt. This is normal and will go away after a few weeks.

What’s the best way to learn to play guitar?

I want to learn to play the guitar on my own, but I know nothing about guitars. I don’t really know where to start. I played piano for 2 or 3 years in middle school but I never reached expert lever or anything. Always had a hard time reading the music without heavy thought.

I was thinking of purchasing an instructional DVD…

I can’t afford a tutor… so what do you guys suggest?

Also.. which kind of guitar is good for begginers?

Last question first:
What guitar is good for beginners? Rule of Thumb: If you like hard music get an electric, if you like softer more relaxing music get an acoustic.

I can help you figure out where to start learning. I don’t think you need a tutor, though those instructional dvds can be good, but for basic starters I don’t even think you need that!

Here’s what you can do to get started right now:

1. List your 10 favorite songs (in any genre).
2. Do a google search for chords for each song on the web.
3. Compare the chords and pick the song with the fewest simplest chords (G, G7, C, D, D7, Dm, E, Em, A, Am).
4. Look up those chords and learn how to finger them
5. Play your chosen song every day, and soon you’ll KNOW those chords by heart. Use a simple down down down down rhythm. Play along with the record as SOON as you can.
6. Rinse and Repeat

What is the best book or dvd or computer program to learn the guitar?

I am into the bluesy sound like the black keys, and Clapton. classic rock too. What is a something to start and what is a good way to expand to a different sound? Well lets just start with the best way to get started. I have both acoustic and electric.

There’s a great DVD set that contains everything you’d learn from years of lessons, including classic blues and blues-based rock stuff. Actually, there are sets for both acoustic and electric guitarists, though you could easily adapt what you learned from one to the other type of guitar. Each set has three DVDs that will take you from the very basics (names and functions of guitar parts, tuning, etc.) through scales and tablature, how riffs are built, and complicated soloing. I bought the electric guitar set after having played for more than 20 years and can’t believe how much my playing has improved. Even better, they’re priced at less than $40 each — a fraction of what you’d pay for even a few lessons. Here are links:
