This is an essential Blues technique, it can make a short solo ("fill") with only one note (just listen to BB King, "the kind of vibrato you would die for" in the words of EC ). Vibrato means that the pitch (not the volume!) of a note is slightly changed to a higher pitch and then back to its original pitch (with a classical vibrato even slightly below the original pitch) by changing the tension of the string. There are different methods to get a vibrato. Pick a note, pressed with your index finger (at first, later try your other fingers) and then:
Move your hand parallel to the fretboard: classical vibrato. This one works good on nylon strings.
Combine bend and release bend. It will generate a very intense, slow finger vibrato.
Turn the hand at the wrist back and forth, your arm is the axis. It will generate a fast and intense vibrato as played by BB King (also called "hummingbird" or "pivot"-vibrato). This wrist vibrato is the most difficult vibrato! B.B. plays it without the thumb on the backside of the neck.
Video example (mpeg, 300kb)
EC vibrato: like the second, but release the thumb/hand totally from the neck. The only contact with the neck is the finger which does the vibrato with the elbow as the turning point. Very strong vibrato. You have to stabilize your guitar with your right arm or otherwise.
Guitars with high string action can be used to generate a vibrato by varying the pressure to the strings.
Some rock guitar players shake the whole guitar to get a vibrato, bend the neck (ouch) or use the wammy bar. Hmmm, if you like it..
References :
http://www.cheapguitarsingapore.com/

Drake, here's a little something to get you started. Hang in there and practice, it will all come in time. Just remember that it can be very frustrating at first but millions of people have learned how to play so there's no reason you can't. These lessons are done on acoustic but they transfer just fine over to electric. This will keep you busy for a good while.

Already very good answers, listen and imitate and also play from the heart, don't just hear but feel the sound of the guitar. We have too much of what Frank Zappa called "lick spewage". Think of a string of guitar notes not as licks but as a melody.
youtube has tons of guitar lessons already!
References :
45 years playing guitar and still intimidated by Eric!

Those guys have something very unique, which is a very good ear! Maybe you heard people saying that those guys aren't really pros at theory. They see music on a different level. When they hear something, they are able to play them immediately, they don't really care of which scale is in, that they're using the 5th, 9th, 7th etc. in a lick. I don't say they know nothing about theory, but they learn faster and play with a lot of soul.
The way that they learnt, they listened to records and tried to emulate that sound. That's why they have a great ear! Their ears got used of listening to notes, so they can figure out where the notes are naturally!
Those ones you listed, they're blues artists. One important thing that you have to know about blues, is that it's a music that requires FEELING to play it. Not anybody can play the blues with feeling. Of course, everybody can learn a lick or two, but to play it properly requires a great vibrato, which is the most touching technique a guitar could ever have. It's said many times that if you play series of thousands of notes, but with no feeling, and then you play a lick of only 5 notes, but with feeling, people will enjoy that 5 notes lick better than those pulls of thousands notes!

Now, to talk about you, if you want to learn to play the guitar, the best method is the one that works for you! Because those greats learnt that way, and you can learn another way, don't be afraid to pursue another way of learning. If you can learn by listening to your favourite artists, and emulate the sound, that's great! If you enjoy reading tabs or musical notation to learn better, again, great!
References :
Not a chance. Some people pick up the guitar at age 50 and land a recording deal at age 55. You're at the perfect age where you can start working on your finger dexterity, discipline, and start to become a fantastic player. Best of luck!
